Glass in the Garden

Who else started a garden during the shelter-in-place order?

I have to admit, I definitely started a garden, but it is looking a little sad now. My parents have had a successful garden in San Diego for a while now, and I’ll be the first to admit I’m pretty jealous of it. We exchange photos so I can watch their garden flourish and they can watch mine wither and pass along tips to have more success next year. Not all is lost on my end, though; this year I got some unexpected inspiration while they were dishing up all the dirt.

Why not add a personal touch to your garden?

Backyard gardens are pretty personal. My dad and (amazing) step-mom, Kathy, grow tomatoes every year which my dad uses to make fresh pasta sauce and Kathy uses to make caprese salad all summer long. Both dishes, of course, incorporate fresh herbs from their garden as well. This year they even have corn which my great-grandpa used to grow in the same plot almost 50 years ago.

Their garden is already very them. My dad built the raised beds a couple years ago and they’ve honed their crop selection to fit in with how they cook their meals. They have their last-place-prize figurines from the bowling league they’re in scattered throughout the plants. (The Mag 5 team values having a good time over winning) I was inspired to give their outdoor oasis just a little more personality and made some glass garden stakes!

Since they’re made of glass, they can hold up to the elements and daily watering. Plus they add a little extra art into the space, which I love. The only downside? Now I’m even more jealous of their garden!
