Do you have drop-in hours?

Not anymore, BUT there’s a similar option!

I had to close the public studio space San Rafael (COVID) so it’s now just me in my private studio space in SF’s North Beach neighborhood. While I can’t be available for drop-ins all the time, you can schedule a Studio Session!

What is FUZED glass?

FUZED is a glass art studio that specializes in fused glass art. Fused glass is made by taking specialty glass (different than sea glass or jars or bottles) and heating it to extreme temperatures in a kiln to melt it together.

What does [insert glass word] mean?

What the heck is frit? What is a millefiori?

I know, lots of new words. So we made a little “glassery” for you! (get it? :D)

How long does it take to make something?

Well, it depends. The short answer? About an hour.

Just like everything else in life, we all go at our own pace. In general, the bigger and/or more detail in a piece the longer it will take. You can expect about an hour of creation for anything coaster size (4 inches square) or larger.

How much does it cost?

Also, why does it cost so much?

Projects are priced individually. In general, the price increases as the size increases. We offer options starting at $15, but we suggest budgeting around $35 per project for first timers. That ensures a project small enough that it isn’t a huge commitment or overwhelming, but also large enough to get to play around a bit without too much limitation.

The glass we use is a super special type of glass. The specific glass we use is Bullseye C.O.E. 90 glass. C.O.E. stands for “Coefficient Of Expansion” which is just a fancy way to say it heats up and cools down at a specific rate. C.O.E. is very important to the success, durability and longevity of glass art, so there is no way to get around using this specialized art glass. Every piece of glass you receive (from the base/canvas glass of your project to the tiniest decorative piece in the mix bin) is handmade.

All of this is to say, it costs a lot to procure the raw materials FUZED uses, and shipping is expensive. I promise, I do my best to keep costs as low as I can.

I’ve never done glass art before. Can I still make something?

ABSOLUTELY! This studio was literally made for people like you. We want to introduce people to fused glass, so no experience is necessary to start creating with FUZED.

What ages can make fused glass?

We welcome ages 5-105! Historically, fused glass art is almost exclusively an adult art form. However, we wanted to bring the fun of FUZED glass to the youth.

We offer a couple safety enhancements that we highly recommend for artists 7 and younger, but FUZED glass is actually safer than most assume.

We have found 5 to be the sweet spot of enough thoughtful creation and dexterity, but always remember you know your kids and their abilities best.
